TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MARCH 23-28

UCSB will try to avoid becoming victim No. 17 in UCLA’s school-record baseball winning streak today (Tues., Mar. 23) at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Bruins are 16-0 and ranked in the top 10 on three national polls.

The host Gauchos are 9-6 after dropping two of three games to heavy-hitting New Mexico State over the weekend. Starting pitchers today (2 p.m.) will be a pair of right-handers, UCLA senior Garett Claypool (1-0, 2.30 ERA) and UCSB junior Jesse Meaux, (3-0, 2.35).

The Dos Pueblos Chargers will challenge Santa Barbara High’s domination of Channel League boys volleyball tonight. The teams will square off at 6 p.m. at DP’s Sovine Gym.

Westmont College will stage the inaugural meet on its new all-weather track Saturday. After a ceremony at 10 a.m., the Warriors will begin competing at 10:45 in field events and 12 p.m. on the track against George Fox (Oregon), Biola, Fresno Pacific and some of Westmont’s own alumni athletes.

The 72nd edition of Santa Barbara’s oldest track and field competition, the Easter Relays, also takes place this weekend at La Playa Stadium. SBCC will host the community college meet Friday, and the high schools will begin running, jumping and throwing at 9 a.m. Saturday.
