TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JULY 6-12

Major league scouts and college baseball coaches will be heading to Westmont College’s Russ Carr Field on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 6-7) to observe the cream of the crop from Southern California high schools at the 2010 Area Code Tryouts. On Tuesday, tryouts will be held for Los Angeles County and San Fernando Valley region players. Tryouts for players from Orange County, Riverside, the Inland Empire and San Diego regions will be held on Wednesday. Both sessions begin at 9 a.m. and are open to the public.

There will be a final tryout on Thursday, July 15, after which players will be selected for a team that will compete in the Area Code Games, to be held August 5-10 at Blair Field in Long Beach. The tournament will feature eight teams culled from regional tryouts across the country.

“It is a great opportunity for us to bring high profile players in large quantities to our campus,” Westmont baseball coach Robert Ruiz said.

The Santa Barbara Foresters will be in action throughout the week at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. They will host Team Vegas in a pair of league games Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday through Saturday they will play in the Rawlings California Cup, a qualifying tournament for the National Baseball Congress World Series. Another bracket of the tournament will be contested in San Luis Obispo, and the top two teams will meet for the championship on Sunday at UCSB.

Beach volleyball legends Randy Stoklos and Sinjin Smith are slated to play at East Beach on Saturday following a ceremony to dedicate the central court to the late Henry Bergmann, a Santa Barbara native who was one of the sport’s greatest players in the ’60s.
