Golfers, Foresters on Fire
Baseball Tournament Title Game at 1 p.m.
Birdies are flying this weekend at the La Cumbre Country Club, where Scott Travers is leading an assault on Tiger Woods’ record in the 111th Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship.
Travers, the California State Amateur champion, is 14-under-par through three rounds (68-65-66—199) on the par-71 course. Woods set the SCGA Amateur record of 270 (also at 14-under) at the Hacienda Golf Club in 1994.
One shot behind Travers at 66-67-67—200 is recent Santa Barbara High graduate Jack Perry. They will tee off the final round at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 11. Perry is bound for Northwestern University, while the 22-year-old Travers plays out of Santa Clara University.
Dos Pueblos High graduate Kevin Marsh, a two-time SCGA Amateur champion, is five strokes off the lead at 68-70-66—204.
Foresters Seek Title
The Santa Barbara Foresters will face Team Vegas at 1 p.m. today at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in the championship game of the Rawlings California Cup. The Foresters won all three games leading up to the final. Team Vegas went 2-1 in pool play and would have to win this afternoon’s game to force a second game at 5 p.m. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth in the National Baseball Congress World Series at Wichita, Kansas.
