Week in Sports
Gauchos Host UC Davis Saturday in Men's Soccer
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 10
SBCC will stage a women’s volleyball match in unfamiliar surroundings – its own Sports Pavilion – when the Vaqueros take the floor against Bakersfield College at 6 p.m. today (Tue., Sept. 28). The Vaqueros played their first 13 matches on the road, winning nine of them. They are ranked No. 18 in the state. Sophomore setter Kelsey Soos was named all-tournament at L.A. Pierce last weekend.
UCSB will celebrate the return of the Gaucho women’s volleyball team to the Thunderdome on Friday night with the unveiling of a new “Legend of the Dome.” Former Gaucho All-American Roberta Gehlke was the volleyball legend honored last year. The Gauchos (8-6), who played their last 11 matches on the road, will face Long Beach State in a Big West match. They got off to a 2-0 start in conference play last week, winning matches at Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine. Junior middle blocker Stacey Schmidt, who had a career-best 23 kills at Northridge, was named the Big West Player of the Week.
Westmont College (8-7), ranked No. 24 in the NAIA volleyball coaches’ poll, also will playing on the home court this week. The Warriors face Biola tonight.
UCSB begins its quest for another Big West men’s soccer championship this week, playing at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night and hosting UC Davis on Saturday night. The Gauchos won their last three matches, including a 2-0 victory over UCLA last Friday before a record Harder Stadium crowd of 15,896. It was the third largest regular-season attendance in NCAA soccer history, topped only by St. Louis University in two games played at Busch Stadium in 1973 and 1980. The Big West honored UCSB’s David Opoku, who scored the first goal against UCLA, and goalkeeper Sam Hayden with Player of the Week awards.
Westmont will celebrate its homecoming with a soccer double-header against San Diego Christian on Saturday afternoon.
Santa Barbara High’s homecoming is built around a football game Friday night between the Dons and the Nordhoff Rangers. The Dos Pueblos Chargers will shoot for their third consecutive victory Friday night against visiting Rio Mesa.
