Week in Sports
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: OCTOBER 7-20
“The biggest week of the season is coming up,” UCSB soccer coach Tim Vom Steeg said after the Gaucho men thumped Cal State Fullerton 3-0 Wednesday night at Harder Stadium. He was talking about three games the Gauchos will play in six days starting next Tuesday when Cal Poly visits UCSB’s “Soccer Heaven.” On Friday, October 15, nationally ranked Duke will come into town for a televised game (Fox Soccer Channel). Two days later, the Gauchos will travel to UC Riverside.
UCSB (5-3-2 overall, 2-1 Big West) has won two consecutive games since a frustrating 1-0 loss at Fullerton last week. The Gauchos attacked the Titans with a vengeance in the return match. They fired off 20 shots in the first half, 11 of them directed at the goal. But not until the 37th minute did they beat the goalkeeper when Joe Eubanks scored off an assist from Michael Nonni. A minute later, Sam Garza made it 2-0 when he fired an 18-yard shot high into the left corner. “A world-class goal,” Vom Steeg said.
James Kiffe scored his first goal as a Gaucho in the second half. He came up from his defensive position made a run toward the goal as Danny Barerra centered the ball. Kiffe hammered it into the net. “Danny made it easy for me,” said Kiffe, who was a productive scorer at San Marcos High and collected nine goals at SBCC in 2007.
Kiffe’s goal was short-handed, as Gaucho defender Michael Boxall received a red card in the second half. Boxall will miss the Cal Poly game, as will goalkeeper Sam Hayden, who is serving a three-game suspension for touching the referee at the end of last week’s game at Fullerton. Eric Reyes earned his second victory between the posts Wednesday.
The Gaucho women’s soccer team has a pair of home games this weekend, Friday night against Cal State Northridge and Sunday afternoon against UC Irvine.
In high school football Friday night, Carpinteria and Dos Pueblos will put three-game winning streaks on the line. Carpinteria will host Grace Brethren, while Dos Pueblos travels to face an undefeated Canyon team at Canyon Country.
Carpinteria’s stadium will be the site of a memorial tribute to teacher and coach John Ward at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
