Week in Sports
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: OCTOBER 14-27
High-intensity action in water polo, football and soccer will be going on Friday (Oct. 15) at Santa Barbara High and UCSB.
Los Angeles Loyola, the top-ranked boys water polo team in CIF Division I, will visit the eighth-ranked Santa Barbara Dons at 3:15 p.m. Following that game, the Dons football team will open Channel League play against San Marcos at 6 p.m. The gates at Peabody Stadium will open at 4:30 p.m. for the 51st Big Game between the crosstown rivals. Santa Barbara leads the series, 27-23. Friday’s game appears to be a toss-up. Both teams went 1-5 in non-league action.
Cox Cable will tape the game for a week of replays on Channel 8 starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The midday showings will continue through next Friday. In addition, the game will be televised at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Thursday. Future games to be televised by Cox included Santa Barbara-Dos Pueblos (Oct. 29), Dos Pueblos-San Marcos (Nov, 5) and Carpinteria-Bishop Diego (Nov. 12).
The big show at UCSB on Friday starts with the women’s soccer match between the Gauchos and UC Davis at 5 p.m. at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The Gaucho men will take on nationally ranked Duke at 8 p.m. in a game to be televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel. The Gauchos (6-3-2) defeated Cal Poly 2-1 on Luis Silva’s goal in the final minute Tuesday. It was their third consecutive victory. Duke (5-2-4) is ranked 14th in the nation by Soccer America.
Fans that are really into Gaucho sports can trek over to the Thunderdome for a season-opening practice by the men’s and women’s basketball teams at 10 p.m.
Stanford jumped ahead of UCSB in the NCAA water polo rankings this week. The Cardinal, now No. 4, will take on the sixth-ranked Gauchos at noon Sunday in Campus Pool.
In high school girls volleyball, Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos meet again Tuesday night at the DP gym. The Chargers beat the Dons 3-1 in their first league encounter.
For walkers, runners and bike riders, there are events this weekend that will benefit organizations dealing with the environment, autism, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
