TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 9-14

Dos Pueblos High sends two Channel League championship teams into the CIF playoffs this week, and the Chargers football team will be playing for another league title.

Palos Verdes will visit DP’s Sovine Gym tonight (Tue., Nov. 9) in the opening round of the Division 1-AA girls volleyball playoffs. Santa Barbara High, the Channel League runner-up, will host Peninsula.

The boys Division 1 water polo playoffs will open Wednesday afternoon, with San Clemente at Dos Pueblos and Huntington Beach at Santa Barbara.

Dos Pueblos and Ventura are both 3-0 in Channel League football heading into their season finale Thursday night at Ventura’s Larrabee Stadium. The Chargers, 6-3 overall, have allowed only 10 points in their three league victories, while Ventura, also 6-3, is the highest scoring team with 103 points in league action.

San Marcos High will conclude its football season at home Wednesday night against Buena. The “Little Big Game” between Bishop Diego and Carpinteria will take the stage Friday night at Carpinteria.

Cate School and Laguna Blanca both qualified for the CIF eight-man football playoffs. Cate (8-0), the second-seeded team, will host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday afternoon, while Laguna Blanca (5-3) will travel Friday night to take on Capistrano Valley Christian.

UCSB’s men’s soccer team, aiming to make another appearance in the NCAA tournament, will try to gain momentum this week in the Big West postseason tournament. The Gauchos will host Cal Poly at in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Regular-season champion UC Irvine takes on Cal State Fullerton in the other semi. The winners will square off Saturday night.

The Gauchos and Cal Poly have split a pair of tense encounters this season by 2-1 scores. UCSB won at Harder Stadium when Luis Silva scored in the last minute of regulation time. The Mustangs returned the favor in San Luis Obispo on Chris Gaschen’s golden goal in the third minute of overtime.

Silva, a junior midfielder, was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after scoring both goals in the Gauchos’ 2-0 victory over UC Riverside. With a turnout of 5,103 spectators Saturday night, UCSB set an NCAA attendance record by averaging 6,451 in the regular season.

The Gauchos will regain the services of midfielder Peter McGlynn, who sat out the Riverside match after incurring a red card at Irvine, but Machael David, the workhorse of the midfield, will miss Wednesday night’s contest because of an accumulation of yellow cards.
