TOP SPORTING EVENTS: APRIL 14-25

J.R. Richards Gym at Santa Barbara High will be the site of some high-powered volleyball Friday and Saturday (April 15-16) during the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions. It features the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 rankings – Mira Costa and Santa Margarita – as well as San Jose’s Bellarmine Prep, which won its third consecutive Dos Pueblos Invitational championship a month ago.

Friday’s opening matches for local schools in the 16-team tournament are: Dos Pueblos vs. Valencia, 11 a.m.; Santa Barbara vs. Clovis West, 2 p.m.; and San Marcos vs. Santa Margarita, 4:15 p.m. The quarterfinals will follow at 6 p.m., with the winner’s bracket at SB High and the consolation bracket at the San Marcos gym. The tournament continues all day Saturday, ending with the championship match at 6:15 p.m.

The 92nd Russell Cup, the oldest high school track and field meet in the state, takes place Saturday at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. Thirty-eight schools are entered.

On the following Saturday, Carpinteria will host the Santa Barbara County Championships.

Runners will be out in force for the Chardonnay 10-Miler and10K at Leadbetter Beach on Saturday morning. Late registration is available at the Outfooters store in La Cumbre Plaza.
