Week in Sports
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JUNE 13-21
The Santa Barbara Foresters have had a couple close calls, but they have entered the third week of the 2011 summer baseball season with a perfect record. They are 7-0 and will play five home games in the next six days.
The California Wahoos from northern Santa Barbara County will come to UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium for a pair of nonleague games against the Foresters on Tuesday (June 14) and Wednesday. The Foresters will hit the road Thursday against the Conejo Oaks in Thousand Oaks. Then they return for a weekend series against the San Luis Obispo Blues, who were Santa Barbara’s closest rivals in 2010 when the Foresters won their 17th California Collegiate League championship.
In last week’s Major League Draft, 57 current and former CCL players were chosen. The Foresters led the way with 19 selections, including eight on their current roster. Chris Joyce, their ace pitcher last year and a standout at SBCC in the spring, has signed with the Cincinnati Reds, who selected him in the 19th round.
