TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JUNE 23-JULY 4

The Santa Barbara Foresters will host the rubber match of a California Collegiate League series against the Orange County Pioneers today (Thu., June 23) at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Santa Barbara (12-3 overall, 8-3 CCL) defeated the Pioneers 7-5 at home Tuesday and dropped a 5-4 decision on the road Wednesday.

The Foresters announced a change in their traditional Fourth of July game. They will play the Conejo Oaks at 3 p.m. at UCSB, instead of Pershing Park.

Elings Park and the Dos Pueblos High softball fields will be the site of a premier tournament this weekend (June 24-26), the Central California American Softball Association Western National Qualifying Tournament. More than 50 girls teams will be playing in three divisions – 10U (ages 9-10), 12U (11-2) and 14U (13-14).

The final chapter of the 2011 high school sports season included the announcement of All-CIF spring selections. Dos Pueblos High’s championship softball team swept top honors in Division 4: Junior pitcher Hannah Harris, the Player of the Year; senior infielder Jordan Roberts, first team selection; and their fathers, Lee Harris and Donn Roberts, the Coaches of the Year.

Santa Barbara pitcher and third baseman Danny Zandona is a first-team selection in Division 2 baseball. Bishop Diego outfielder Jack Gregson and pitcher Cody Yokubaitis were named to the second team in Division 6. In softball,

SEMANA NAUTICA

July 1-11 – Semana Nautica (“marine week”) began in the 1930s when Santa Barbara residents organized sporting activities with visiting Navy seamen. It evolved into an annual sports festival open to the public around the July 4 holiday. There is no charge for spectators at any event, but the festival’s primary objective is to encourage participation. Events in the 74th Semana Nautica include age-group and masters swimming, ocean swims, a 15-kilometer run, beach volleyball, beach soccer, softball, and a cardboard kayak race.
