TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JULY 12-27

The Santa Barbara Foresters are loaded with baseball stars. They will comprise one third of the players in the 2011 California Collegiate League All-Star Game – that’s 18 out of 54 selections – on Wednesday evening, July 13, at Casey Stengel Field in Glendale. The game will be televised at 6 p.m. on Fox Sports West.

The Foresters are coming off a four-game sweep of the Rawlings California Cup. They defeated the Menlo Park Legends 6-2 in Sunday’s championship game, earning a ticket to Wichita for their 19th consecutive appearance at the National Baseball Congress World Series in August.

Winning individual tournament honors for the Foresters were MVP Derek Legg, a third baseman from Cal State Fullerton, who hit for a .533 average with two home runs and eight RBIs; and outstanding pitcher Codey Morehouse, a right-hander from Houston.

While the Foresters will not play their next home game at UCSB until Friday, there will be an international rugby match at Harder Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The U.S. Collegiate All-Americans will play the second of a three-match series against New Zealand’s All-University side. The Americans won 60-17 in San Diego on Saturday, taking advantage of the New Zealanders’ encounter with 85-degree weather shortly after leaving a chilly winter in their homeland.

Admission is free to the rugby match.

Attention golfers: If you want to support the girls’ and boys’ golf programs at three local high schools (San Marcos, Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara), sign up for the fifth annual Knarley Harley Tournament on Sunday, July 24, at Glen Annie.
