Week in Sports and Upcoming Events
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: SEPTEMBER 27-OCTOBER 8
UCSB is ranked No. 7 by Soccer America in its latest weekly men’s soccer top 25. The next eight days will indicate whether the Gauchos (6-1-1) deserve to be there. They will play three tough matches, beginning Wednesday night, September 28, when they open Big West Conference play at UC Riverside (5-2-1). Then they will host two huge games at Harder Stadium — Saturday against No. 8 UC Irvine (8-1-0) and next Wednesday, October 5, against No. 5 Akron (6-0-2), the defending national champion. The Zips won their title by defeating Louisville 1-0 in the College Cup final at Harder Stadium last December.
Gaucho midfielder Luis Silva, who scored a hat trick in last week’s 3-0 victory over San Diego, and goalkeeper Andre Grandt, who recorded a pair of shutouts, received Player of the Week honors from the Big West. Silva also was named to the College Soccer News national Team of the Week.
UCSB’s women host a pair of conference soccer games Friday and Sunday. They feature sophomore forward Erica Shelton, whose two goals last week helped the Gauchos defeat San Diego State 1-0 and tie Cal State Bakersfield 1-1. Another dangerous sophomore striker is SBCC’s Jessica Domenichelli, who will be in action Friday when the Vaqueros take on Hancock College at La Playa Stadium.
On the high school front, Santa Barbara visits San Marcos in girls volleyball tonight (Tue., Sept. 27), a week ahead of the Dons’ October 4 showdown at Dos Pueblos, the No. 2 ranked team in CIF Division 1. Bishop Diego’s football team, ranked No. 6 in the CIF East Valley Division, faces Fillmore on Saturday night at SBCC.
Upcoming events in tennis and golf will benefit Special Olympics. Saturday (Oct. 1) at the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara, the “A” Doubles Classic will include exhibition matches with Special Olympics athletes paired with high school and college players. Entries are being filled for the Special Olympics Golf Tournament on October 28 at Glen Annie Golf Club. Information: sosc.org.
