A state grant will allow the Sheriff’s Department to reinstate a full-time deputy position for rural crime prevention. The grant, from the state Office of Emergency Services, is specific to that cause. The sheriff’s office had a dedicated rural crimes deputy beginning in 2007-2008, but the position was cut this fiscal year when the state indicated the grant was to be discontinued, and the sheriff had to reduce his staff.
