Pat McElroy, a 32-year veteran of the Santa Barbara Fire Department and former leader of the firefighters’ union, was named the city’s interim fire chief pending the final replacement for Chief Andy DiMizio, whose retirement is effective December 14. In recent years, McElroy has served as assistant chief in charge of operations, meaning he oversees the city’s eight fire stations, the firefighters stationed at them, and all the trucks and equipment needed to respond to a fire. McElroy is among 37 applicants who’ve sought the chief’s post. A final decision is expected in January.
