A 31-year-old Isla Vista resident was hurt in an explosion he reportedly caused trying to extract hash oil from marijuana plants in his Trigo Road home. Mathew Bacon was arrested by Santa Barbara County Fire investigators for arson and conspiracy, and he has been treated for minor burns to his face and arm.

According to County Fire spokesperson Capt. David Sadecki, firefighters responded to a gas leak at 6624 Trigo Road and found a one-story duplex with a burned kitchen and its windows and a sliding glass door blown out. A Sheriff’s deputy on the scene told firefighters there had been an explosion and that a potential patient had fled the scene.

The county’s Arson Task Force determined a flash fire had indeed ignited “from the illegal act of obtaining ‘Hashish Oil’ from marijuana plants,” Sadecki said in a prepared statement. Bacon was located and taken into custody soon after. His bail is set at $250,000.
