Gaviota Rest Stops Remain Closed

Extensive renovations ongoing since April at the Gaviota rest stops along Highway 101 mean the north- and south-bound stops will be closed during Thanksgiving weekend. The $927,000 project is overhauling bathroom plumbing systems and adding water conservation measures, such as low-flow fixtures and automatic shut-off faucets. Electrical and irrigation systems are also being upgraded, as well as tile, woodwork, paint, and landscaping. Caltrans estimates that more than one million visitors use the Gaviota rest stops, which are expected to reopen in January 2015.
