School board members gave the green light to the Foundation for Santa Barbara High School to raise $500,000 for a shade project. Adjacent to the school’s greenhouse, the previous structure was torn down because it was unsound, according to facilities director David Hetyonk.

The district had budgeted $17,000 to rebuild it with poles and fabric, but foundation members want to vastly expand the project. The Pulice Family Trust will take the lead on the effort and has already kicked in $250,000. Depending on how long it takes to raise the money and for the Division of State Architect (DSA) to review the plans, construction could start as early as next summer.
