San Marcos’ Andy Mandrell (22) keeps Cate’s Dean Smith from pushing him off the ball. Mandrell kept control and scored moments later.

Two second-half goals by Geoffrey Acheampong rallied Cate past San Marcos, 4-2, on Tuesday at Warkentin Stadium in a non-league match.

“I give a ton of credit to our guys. It’s not easy to bounce back from such a flat start against a team that can make you pay for your mistakes,” said Rams head coach Peter Mack.

San Marcos took a 1-0 lead soon after the opening whistle on a goal by Jake Castanha. Cate’s Christian Herman made the score 1-1 before San Marcos’ Andy Mandrell gave the Royals the lead again with a powerful strike from just outside the box.

Djata Nyaawie’s header off a long throw-in from Ben Jessup pulled Cate even at 2-2 before halftime.

“Once again, I do not believe the score tells the story,” reported Royals head coach Rob Lauderdale. “It was an exciting game. We played well and are getting better. Kudos to Cate on a well played game.”
