The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be out in full force this New Year’s Eve with a maximum enforcement period starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31 and going through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, January 4. Last year, 14 people were killed in collisions across the state during the max enforcement period. According to a press release from CHP, people are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they suspect another driver to be drunk and should be prepared to tell the dispatcher the location, make, model, and license plate number of the vehicle.

Earlier this month, a multi-agency DUI team called Avoid the 12 arrested 32 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during a six-day period beginning on December 12. Last year, the same initiative resulted in 33 arrests. Avoid the 12’s heightened efforts will continue across the county through January 1.
