Game of the Week

11/7: Running: Santa Barbara Veterans Day Half Marathon Dwindling participation led organizers to cancel the Santa Barbara International Marathon after a six-year run, but all energies are focused on its offspring, the 13.1-mile half marathon. There is a new starting line on the UCSB campus. A two-mile straightaway on Highway 217 will tempt runners to go out fast; they may regret it when they encounter the climb from Las Positas Road up Cliff Drive in the 10th mile. The last two miles will go downhill to “the world’s most beautiful finish line” at Leadbetter Beach. The cutoff time is four hours (18:18 per mile). The fastest time on the old course was 1:06:24 by Julian de Rubira in 2010. Alvina Begay’s 1:15:00 in 2012 is the women’s record. 7am start. University Plaza, UCSB. Visit
