The Hungry Cat restaurant on Chapala Street is closing after nearly 10 years in business.

Owner David Lentz announced that via email this morning, citing “an offer we couldn’t refuse,” declining business, the “current economic climate,” and being a father with three young kids in Los Angeles as reasons why. Lentz, who is married to another star L.A. chef, Suzanne Goin, said that their flagship Hungry Cat in Hollywood will continue business as usual.

The seafood-focused establishment was on the front wave of elevating Santa Barbara’s contemporary restaurant scene, helping to bring craft cocktails and shared plates to the forefront. It will remain open until Christmas, serving all cocktails for $12 and fresh oysters daily for $1.50 a slurp.

“It has always been our pleasure to serve the Santa Barbara community and perhaps we will have another opportunity in the future,” said Lentz, who is planning a farewell dinner in December. “Thanks again to a great city, wonderful community and a decade of support.”
